Tri for Mike

As many of you know our community recently lost a wonderful person. Mike Coyle died in a tragic bike accident on July 13th while competing in a regional triathlon. I originally met Mike and his wife Kristin through my wife who had graduated from Bishop Kearney High School with them and then stayed acquainted with him through the years via our mutual connection to the triathlon world. Regionally, Mike was a well-known top tier triathlete, cyclist and runner. We have decided to dedicated this years Finger Lakes Triathlon to Mike. Mike had competed in the Finger Lakes Triathlon multiple times and had volunteered when not competing. A couple of years ago Mike had injured himself quite badly in a bike race and this prevented him from doing FLT. However, in true Mike fashion, he contacted me offering to volunteer at the race. He showed up at dawn on race morning with a big smile hidden behind painful scars from the bike accident and I proceeded to give him the awful job of carrying all of the water for the race to the finish line. He was still smiling through those scars at the end. That was Mike. The Finger Lakes Triathlon is run by and is the biggest annual fundraiser for the Mary M. Gooley Hemophilia Center. We are extraordinarily fortunate to have this event raise the money that it does for the Center annually. As many of you know, every year we run a program called â??Train For Treatment.â?? This is a fundraising program that allows athletes doing the race to have a donation page and raise money for the Center as they train throughout the summer (many of the pages have â??tri-buddiesâ?? on them who are pediatric patients of the Center). It is a wonderful program that has raised much needed money for us. Many of you have already started to build pages for this year â?? and we canâ??t thank you enough! However, in light of this tragedy, we have decided to partially suspend â??Train For Treatmentâ?? this year and instead host a fundraiser for Mikeâ??s family. For those of you already doing TFT or those who would still like to do it, the campaign will still be active and we appreciate it. We will still refund your race fee if you raise $350 or more for the Hemophilia Center since that was already announced, however we are suspending the prizes for this year to instead focus on the fundraiser. Train For Treatment will be back for next yearâ??s race and I encourage you all to consider doing it then â?? itâ??s a great program. Below is a link to a donation page that we have set up with a bio of Mike and some pictures of him with his wife and two little girls (ages 4 & 6). Please click the link to see the page and if you can please make a donation. 100% of the money raised will go to the â??Coyle Girls Education Fund.â?? Please donâ??t hesitate to forward this email along to others who may be interested. Thank you all so much for being part of the Finger Lakes Triathlon â?? whether youâ??ve only done the race once or do it every year. This year we are going to â??Tri For Mike.â?? Please stay safe as you swim bike and run. To visit the memorial page: Tri for Mike
